Feeding Speedy

We fed Speedy the corn snake for the second time the other night. The first time, he was in his little container that we originally purchased him in, so we never saw much aside from the lump indicating he had eaten something. I had tried to feed him about a week ago (which would have been the second time), but he wasn’t interested in eating anything.

In case you’re wondering, we feed Speedy “pinky” mice, which are tiny, newly born mice that don’t have any hair. Don’t worry—they’re dead when we give them to him. I know that it sounds gross, but you know… circle of life, and all of that jazz.

Anyway, I decided I’d better try to feed him again, and the kids were all excited to give him his dinner. We all gathered around the cage, and placed the mouse right in front of him so he couldn’t miss it. (Last time, I didn’t do that, so I’m not sure he even knew it was ever there.) He moved toward it and circled around it a little, flicking his little tounge out to see what the heck we’d just put in front of him. After a few seconds, he figured out what was going on, and went to town.

I honestly didn’t expect to see him eat right away, but it was a real treat. I’m sure everyone has seen a snake eat a mouse or rabbit or whatever on TV, but like just about everything else, it’s pretty neat to see it in real life, right in front of you. Within a couple of minutes, he had consumed the whole thing, and was working it back, further into his body. Even my wife, who wasn’t keen on the idea of having a snake, and even less keen on feeding it mice, was captivated by the whole thing. By the end she admitted it was pretty cool.

Next time, I’ll try to get pictures. :)
