Finally Fall!

The weather has finally started to get cold here in KC, and boy have I looked forward to it. It seems like summer ecroaches more and more every year on autumn. The year we moved to Colorado, I remember still raking leaves in late November because it was still pretty warm and there was no sign of snow. As a kid in Iowa, I usually enjoyed snow by Thanksgiving, and September was typically when the weather dropped into the 50’s and 60’s. Unfortunately, September in KC usually means a high of 90 on most days. At least we should have a relatively normal Halloween.

In Colorado, it was usually below zero and snowing on Halloween. This made it difficult to distinguish the kids’ costumes since they needed a layer of coats to keep them from freezing. They didn’t enjoy the benefit of the “adult” treats that many people in Breckenridge hand out, like hot chocolate laced with peppermint schnapps, or spiked apple cider. (I have to say, Halloween in Summit County is particularly awesome. Of course, most things in Summit County go hand-in-hand with alcohol, so that may have something to do with it.)

We are a family that enjoys Halloween. We don’t get into a lot of the really gross, Freddy-and-Jason-esque kind of stuff. Instead, we have fake spiders and webs everywhere, lots of pumpkins, orange Halloween lights, and other fun things like that. It’s a blast to have weekly scary movie nights during October with our siblings, too. There’s nothing like getting together for some good ghost stories.

Fall has got to be my favorite time of year. Between my birthday, the beautiful weather, the falling leaves, Halloween, the start of school, the harvest, and all of the other cool stuff, I think it’s pretty much better than any other time of year.
