Wistful

I’ve been felling pretty homesick lately. I don’t know if it’s this weather, or this time of year… it’s something. It’s affected my entire mood. I’m generally a pretty easy-going kind of guy, so it bothers me when something, uh, bothers me… well, duh. ;)

I have a huge craving for a day-long hike in the mountains. The fresh air, the cool breezes and warm sun. The smell of the warm pine needles that carpet the wilderness floor. The almost magical atmosphere you encounter when you stumble upon a stand of aspen in the middle of a hillside covered in lodgepole pine. Your friendly Steller’s Jay guide, flitting amongst the branches, keeping an eye on your progress. The best part? Absolutely no destination or agenda. Pure exploration, and freedom.

Hiking was the number one thing I could do when my batteries needed recharging. It’s almost a spiritual experience out there, alone with nature. I can still get a little of that working in my yard, but it’s not quite the same. I am mentally working to think of Kansas City as my home, but it’s a real effort. I’m really not sure I will every think of this place as home.

Fortunately, it has a few things going for it: I really love my church, I have a few growing friendships, and my job isn’t so bad either.
