I found some other goodies with NuFile. Primarily, it’s completely configurable! You can decide what kinds of new files you would like it to create, and can even build templates for these files. You can also select which application you would like to have open a newly created file, or set it so no app automatically opens. You can even edit how the items display in the contextual menu. Very nice!

Maybe it’s just due to my constant exposure to Windows, but I’ve recently been annoyed that I don’t have an easy way to do something simple like create a new, empty text file in OS X.
For example, in Windows, you can just right-click and choose New->Text File, and there you have it—a nascent little text file ready for your nefarious schemes. In OS X, however, you have to open a text editor and save a new text file somewhere through the standard save dialogue. This brings up the whole idea of being able to edit a text file with Quick Look rather than having to open TextEdit or whatever, but that’s another topic, so I digress.
Anyway, I found a nice little solution: NuFile. This little app gives you a new contextual menu item to do just what I described. Right-click, and you get a get a ‘New File’ menu option with several choices, including an option to create the much coveted text file.
Believe it or not, NuFile takes things one step further than Windows, which I actually prefer—not only does it create the file where you have specified, but it opens up the appropriate app for you to actually work in the file (e.g. If you right-click and create a new text file, it pops open the file in TexEdit so you can get right to work).
I suppose some people may find this an unnecessary addition to the OS, but it’s going to be a time saver for me. If anything, it’ll help me bring a little consistency to the way I use my computers, having to constantly move between the Mac and Windows. Now if I could figure out a way to eliminate that pesky ‘More’ contextual menu subcategory in Leopard…

Too bad we’ll probably never see it here in the states.

I’m sure this would look retarded, but it’s oh so practical!
